Baking Apprentices

Profile photoThe Level 4 National Certificate in Baking is a three to four-year training program for apprentices working within the wider baking industry.

There are three different broad baking apprenticeship options available, catering to the diverse career options open to bakers in New Zealand.

Craft baking apprentices learn the creative, hands-on art of making and decorating either cakes, pastries, biscuits or breads, or a combination of all of these products.

Craft bakers also gain a good understanding of why certain techniques and ingredients work well for some products but not others, and what makes products appealing to customers.

Plant baking apprentices work on large production lines, typically making packaged breads or similar mass-produced baked goods intended for local supermarkets and grocery stores.

Because plant bakers must work with large and complex machinery, they need different skills and knowledge that apply to a plant baking environment.

Instore / Franchise apprentices typically work onsite in supermarket baking, where baking skills and the ability to present yourself and the products to customers are equally important.
