Level 2 Maritime Qualifications form a pathway into higher level qualifications in the Maritime industry, and are intended to act as a springboard from which people may progress towards other National Certificates in Maritime, or the learning component of the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Certificates of Competency.

 

 

Level 2 Commercial Inshore Vessel Deckhand. This qualification is designed for people employed, or seeking to be employed, as deckhands on restricted limit vessels, and can be achieved on-job and recognises the skills and knowledge required by commercial operators working inshore and in coastal waters.

Level 2 Commercial Inshore Passenger Vessel Hospitality Crew. This qualification is designed for people who are employed or who are seeking to be employed as hospitality crew members on commercial inshore passenger vessels. The qualification can achieved in an on-job situation and recognises the skills and knowledge required by a commercial inshore passenger and tourist operators. The qualification has been designed to be flexible and accessible so that people have an entry path into the Maritime industry.

Level 3 Merchant Navy Deck and Engine Room Watch Rating. This qualification is designed for people intending to be employed within the Merchant Navy sector of the maritime industry. They will typically be working under supervision on a commercial vessel as an integrated rating, covering both the functional requirements of the deck and engine room watch rating.

This qualification recognises that the holder has the skills and knowledge to be competent in

  • Operating auxiliary equipment and systems

  • Maintaining adherence to safe working practices

  • Securing the vessel at mooring, anchor and berth

  • Conducting sea safety and sea survival functions of first aid, fire fighting and damage control

  • Performing deck seamanship functions to maintain and alter the ship's heading

  • Preparing the ship's deck equipment for passage and cargo operations and transfer

  • Maintaining the condition and appearance of the vessel.

Achievement of the qualification also recognises that the holder has gained the skills to be competent in

  • Engine room functions of machine servicing

  • Equipment and machine monitoring under supervision

  • Welding and the use of hand and portable power tools.

Level 4 Commercial Coastal Watchkeeping. This qualification is for people seeking to perform the functions of a Mate on commercial coastal vessels. The qualification recognises that the holder has the required skills in marine engineering, navigation, seamanship, sea survival, sea safety, and first aid.

The qualification has a significant degree of commonality with the National Certificate in Commercial In-shore Vessel Operations, with an optional strand in Business Operations.

Level 4 Master of Commercial Coastal Vessel with optional strand in Navigation. This qualification is for people seeking to perform the functions of a Master on commercial coastal vessels, and recognises that the holder has the skills and knowledge necessary to

  • Undertake the management functions of crew supervision

  • Maintain shipboard management practices

  • Carry out the seamanship functions of operational control of the vessel

  • Determine the effects of weather and sea state on the safety of the passage

  • Maintain stability on non-ballast vessels

  • Conduct the sea safety and sea survival functions of damage control, and respond to personal injury.

Achievement of the optional Ocean Navigation strand recognises that, in addition to having been credited with the compulsory unit standards, the holder has also gained skills in the seamanship functions of ocean navigation and the control of a vessel in an ocean environment.
