Himo and Alex

Himo and Alex are doing a Maintenance and Diagnostic apprenticeship at O-I Glass, a company who produce bottles for the NZ breweries. Through their apprenticeships they are learning how machines work, developing their problem solving skills and earning regular money while perfecting skills that will ensure they'll always be highly employable.

Arshad

Arshad is doing a Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning apprenticeship at Cook Industries, who service the air conditioning needs of a number of large commercial customers like Sky City and even cruise ships! He gets out and about with his job, and rarely has to work inside a workshop. Arshad is learning about piping, electrics and developing his problem solving skills. When he is qualified, he will be able to get a job in any developed country!

Alex

Alex is doing a Light Fabrication apprenticeship at Mulcahy Engineering, who make purpose built machinery for the dairy and marine industries. He gets to learn specialised engineering skills such as welding, which he finds extremely interesting! Alex has found the engineering to be highly technical and extremely inventive – he always finds his job challenging!

Josh

Josh is doing a Toolmaking apprenticeship with Specialised Components, who produce moulded products. He uses 3D designs and programmes CNC machines to cut moulds, which are then used to make products such as water bottles. Josh gets to work on conventional lathes as well as computer-controlled CNC machines. His job is highly technical, and will open up many travel opportunities for him when he's qualified!

Nathan & James

Nathan and James are doing Heavy Fabrication apprenticeships at Tenix, who build boats for the NZ Navy as well as pleasure craft. They get to work with all the sub-contractors and learn how to build a boat from scratch! Nathan works in the aluminium bay building the super structure of the boat while James works in the steel bay fabricating the boat panels. This job will take both Nathan and James around the world!

Derek Janning

Derek is in the first year of his Machining apprenticeship. Becoming an apprentice means he earns while he learns - and that's given him increased independence and confidence.

Adam Franklin

Adam started his career as an apprentice. Now he's the Operations Manager at a steel fabrication business, managing 30 staff. He's learnt how to balance his social life with work, and he's earning enough money to live life to the full and enjoy his hobbies.

Nancy Chow

Nancy is doing her first year of an apprenticeship in machining and toolmaking. She tried working in catering and in an office job for a while, but wanted something with more variety. Nancy has found it satisfying and easy to combine work and study within the same industry, unlike peers who struggle trying to balance university and part time jobs.

Simon Ward

Simon's dyslexic and admits he "wasn't a model student." He completed a mechanical engineering apprenticeship, and at 23 years old he was a production manager earning $100,000 a year. Now he's the owner of a multi-million dollar engineering business.
