Businesses signing up new apprentices in Mechanical Engineering or Fabrication before 20 December 2009 will get the rest of the year's Base Apprentice Fee for free.

Competenz chief executive John Blakey said the ITO was offering this saving to all New Zealand employers to incentivise them to sign up apprentices early to avoid a pre-Christmas and post New Year rush.

"This offer will allow employers to get their apprentices underway with on-job training, without incurring apprentice management fee's for the last quarter," said John.

For Auckland based businesses signing on before 20 December, it will mean the apprentice will be accepted into the February night classes for NCME and Fabrication at Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT).

New for 2010, MIT has also introduced a night class intake in July, meaning an apprentice can be signed up throughout the year and still complete a night course. (MIT also uses a room at Northcote College for Competenz night class apprentices, for NCME and Fabrication V5 only.)
