Competenz is a sponsor of the TV show that gives high school students a unique insight into career paths around New Zealand. The rail and baking industries feature on Saturday, March 28 (9.30am). Careers in the fire protection and refrigeration industries also feature in the latest series.

Rail

Sam explores his lifelong interest in trains by going behind the scenes at KiwiRail to learn about freight and passenger services. He discovers how the administration centre distributes freight and tries his hand as a shunter in the marshalling yard. He also learns what it takes to become a driver or signal man and gets an insight into the team environment.

Baking

Taine is up at 2am to check out what goes on at Heaven’s Bakery in Hawke’s Bay. He learns about the different ovens, products and techniques involved. Under the watchful eye of his mentor he also tries his hand at making scones, pies and pastries and discovers that making a product that customers enjoy is worth the effort.

Fire protection

Jesse visits the Auckland War Memorial Museum for some hands-on experience and learns about the vital role of fire safety in protecting our national treasures. He discovers that system checking and regular maintenance are essential to protect visitors, staff and the museum’s valuable collections.

Refrigeration

Michael finds a career as a refrigeration engineer offers variety and plenty of opportunity. He also discovers it’s a job demanding numerous skills, including engineering, electrical, plumbing and fault finding. A certain amount of agility is also helpful to get to some of the tricky places where plant equipment is located.

Each episode features three careers, with practical advice from Career Services advisors.
