Competenz again congratulates Goodman Fielder's top apprentices Adam McLean and Destine Roycroft on their recent success in the 2010 New Zealand Young Baker of the Year competition.

Claiming the title of New Zealand Young Baker of the Year, Adam's performance not only reinforces he is a baker to watch in the future, but that Goodman Fielder's commitment to industry training is paying dividends for its business and employee success.

Destine was awarded third place in the same event, rounding out a very successful competition for the team at Goodman Fielder.

The judges said that both competitors had listened to and acted upon the feedback they received in the internal GF competition a few weeks back.

Goodman Fielder's Joe Jarkiewicz says the company couldn't be prouder of their dual achievements and shows the benefits of the feedback and experience gained from the Quality Bakers competition where Adam and Destine improved noticeably on the areas they did not score so well in during that competition.

For his title, Adam received a $10,000 research grant to use to travel and look into new baking technology and it appears he will go to the International Baking Industry Expo (IBIE) in Las Vegas in September.

Dubbed as the most comprehensive Baking Expo in the world, more than 700 exhibiting companies will showcase cutting-edge technologies, equipment and new products to help food industry attendees strengthen their competitive position and uncover new opportunities.

"The expo offers an excellent opportunity to see what direction the industry is taking, from many aspects, as it's where many suppliers choose to launch their latest products," explained Joe.

Destine also had obviously put in extra hours of practice to improve her skills and theoretical knowledge on baking, and as a result was judged top performer in the baking category at the national event.

In recognition of their participation and success in the competition, Destine and Adam both received a certificate and a book on baking.
