The Level 4 Locksmithing qualification recognises the skills and knowledge required to be a competent locksmith, and is especially for people currently employed or seeking to be employed in the locksmithing industry.

People who complete this qualification gain a comprehensive range of specialist locksmithing competencies, covering motor vehicles, safes and other specialist locking systems. All learning is done both on-the-job and via courses at polytechnic (or correspondence) to complete the qualification requirements - this type of learning is what's referred to as your apprenticeship.

The core competencies, skills and knowledge covered by this qualification include:

• Design, installation and servicing of a wide range of locking systems

• Manufacture, assembly, test and repair of a wide range of key types

• Customer service, communications and computing

People awarded this qualification are able to safely and effectively apply the specific knowledge, skills and tools required by current industry standards and specifications. Maintaining integrity and ethical practices are 'must' in the locksmithing industry. The elective components of this qualification also allow people to develop other more general skills relevant to this industry, such as computing, communications and basic first aid.

Locksmiths can expect to earn anywhere between $30,000 - $45,000 on an hourly rate, which will increase as you gain more experience or move into more senior roles within this industry.

Because the skills and knowledge required to become a qualified locksmith are linked to mechanic engineering, you can move into higher learning in this field with the Level 6 National Diploma in Engineering.
