An apprenticeship is a carefully structured training programme designed to provide the apprentice with the skills and experience they need for a career in their chosen industry.

It combines practical, on-the-job experience with off-job learning and results in an internationally recognised National Certificate.

  • Apprentices gain the skills and experience required for an industry career while being paid to work full time
  • Apprenticeship programmes are paced to suit the individual
  • Apprentices receive training and experience on the job, as well being trained as off the job
  • Apprentices typically attend a mix of block courses and day release training with regular study required at an evening class or by correspondence
  • An apprenticeship is based on a range of unit standards that specify what an apprentice must achieve to gain their National Certificate
  • An apprenticeship typically takes three to four years to finish with one or more unit standard levels completed each year
  • Apprenticeship training is not limited by age and most apprenticeship programmes recognise current competencies and previous learning, so your existing employees may be suitable for an apprenticeship.
