If you enjoy getting creative, working with technology and producing a useful product, a career in the printing industry could suit you

Jason Rako - PMP Print, Christchurch

After putting in the hard yards during his print finishing apprenticeship, Jason Rako took out the ultimate award in 2011 – print industry Apprentice of the Year.

Jason works at PMP Print in Christchurch. He uses his knowledge and skills to operate different technology that puts the finishing touches on printed products, including a wide range of well-known magazines such as Cuisine, NZ Autocar, Skysport and the TV Guide.

After leaving school Jason enrolled on a Diploma in Graphic Design not knowing much about the print side of the industry.

“During this diploma I learnt a lot about this industry and wanted to be a part of it. I searched for an apprenticeship in pre-press, printing and print finishing. I just wanted in,” says Jason.

“The main thing I enjoyed about my apprenticeship is the unknown becoming clear to me. I love to know how each part of each machine works, learning this by stripping down and operating these machines has paid off.

“My career goal is to learn as much as I can about the print industry and further myself and the company I am working for.

“At the same time I’m not looking too far ahead because things can change in the flick of a switch as learned during the Christchurch earthquakes. Goals like starting my own company and renovating my first house have taken a pause.

“I would be interested in taking on another apprenticeship in printing to further my knowledge in this industry and to have more options for the future,” says Jason.

“I am very happy to win the Apprentice of the Year Award knowing that I’m at the top of my game. Who knows what I can achieve in the future in this diverse industry. This is just the beginning.”

When Jason isn’t at work he is keeping busy with the renovation of his first house with his finance and helping to organise their wedding.

“I also enjoy fishing and scuba diving – there’s nothing like going away for the weekend and catching your dinner, knowing how fresh it was over a cold beer in the setting sun,” says Jason.

Jason has enrolled on the Diploma in Management – Print to further his career.
