They call her ‘Ma Baker’. But it’s not a name Lagi Manase minds. For her, the bakery that she manages at New World Eastridge is like home and her team is like family. It’s not surprising she feels that way – Lagi, 51, has been at New World Eastridge for 16 years.

During her career, Lagi has earned a number of honours, such as the New World Bakery Apprentice of the Year Award in 2008. But this time round Lagi’s New World family are celebrating her most recent achievement – the completion of her National Certificate in Craft Baking.

It’s been a few years in the making. It’s involved some sacrifices but also a lot of fun, including six, week-long workshops in Napier.

‘It is so interesting,’ says Lagi. ‘I’m learning something new, meeting new people, swapping ideas and sharing knowledge. People think that working in a supermarket will get you nowhere – they don’t realise that there are so many opportunities to learn and up-skill.’

Lagi sees having a qualification as a real benefit to customers, who demand the highest quality.

‘Next year we will revamp our store and the bakery will move. It’s a really good thing for us to have so many qualified bakers in there. We are revamping our skills too.’

One of Lagi’s team is embarking on a Level 4 course. It’s Lagi’s 26 year old daughter Sieni Manase. Maybe ‘Ma Baker’ will eventually need a new name - ‘Grandma Baker’.
