Competenz Butcher Apprentice of the Year announced

Luka Young butcher

Luka Young from PAK’nSAVE Lincoln Road in Auckland was named the 2014 Competenz Butcher Apprentice of the Year at Friday night’s butchery awards.

Held in Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre, Luka took part in a cutting test, an exam, and an interview to win the award.

As part of his prize, Luka will be travelling to Europe next year for a study tour, joining some of New Zealand’s top butchers.

“This has been an epic experience, one of kind. It was a great opportunity to learn and I have no doubt it is going to help further my career - now it’s onto bigger and better things,” says Luka.

Runner-up on the evening was awarded to Amy Jones from New World Taumarunui.

Months of training and preparation saw Luka and Amy's butchery ability and keen attitudes rise to the top and bring home the titles.

Regional competitions were held earlier in June to determine a winner from each region to go forward to the Grand Final.

The highly regarded competition recognises the talent of our nation’s butchery apprentices and the judges commented that the skill level this year was the best they have seen.
