Electronic Milk Meter takes 2014 Plastics Industry Supreme Design Award

Millennium Plastics Ltd were awarded the overall Supreme Award at the 2014 Plastics Industry Biennial Design Awards held on Friday 3rd October, for their all-new Waikato Milking Systems Electronic Milk Meter which provides powerful and accurate real-time milking data, enabling the farmer to improve their herd management decisions and long term profitability of the herd.

Millennium Plastics Ltd also took out Gold Awards in both the Primary Product and Conventional Injection Moulding Process Categories.

The 2014 Plastics Industry Biennial Design Awards winners were announced at a gala dinner held at the Ellerslie Convention Centre in Auckland on Friday 3rd October. The evening was hosted by Plastics New Zealand, with Competenz as the key event sponsor.

Special guest for the evening was Dr Mary Quin, Chief Executive Officer of Callaghan Innovation – who fittingly seeks to accelerate the commercialisation of innovation by firms in New Zealand.

The 2014 awards attracted 31 entries, showcasing the very best of innovative plastic design and manufacturing capabilities across the very broad spectrum of our Industry, Plastics New Zealand Business Manager Ken Sowman said. In total, 39 Awards were presented on the night - 13 Bronze, 13 Silver, 12 Gold, and the Overall Supreme Award.

Every gold medallist, bar one, is investing in technical training for their employees.

As John Blakey, CEO of Competenz said “bringing innovation to life takes skills and investment.” It is great to see investment in people’s skills being reflected in the development of innovative new products for customers in New Zealand and around the world.

The entries were judged not only on concept, design, commercial performance and export potential, but increasingly on enhancing environmental sustainability throughout the product’s life cycle.

Product Category Gold Award winners on the night included Waipak Ltd for their Goodman Fielder Tearcap in the Food & Beverages Category, Talbot Technologies Ltd for the Ainsworth Premium Plus Series – Magnificent 7 & Cash Challenge Toppers in the Industrial Category. Styrobeck Ltd for the Aridon Insulated Weather Protection Panels in the Building Category and Axiam Plastics Ltd for their Exoskel Urban Climber in the Consumer Products category. Silver was the highest award in the Environmental Category which was presented to Flight Plastics Ltd for their Recycled PET (RPET).

Process Category Gold Award winners on the night included: Gallagher Group Ltd for the Gallagher T20 Terminal in the Co-Moulded Injection Moulding Category, Iplex Pipelines Ltd for their Fusible PVC™ in the Extrusion Category. Adept Ltd was awarded Gold in the Compounding/Material Development category for their innovative Adept Soluble Material and Styrobeck Ltd for the Aridon Insulated Weather Protection Panels in the Foams Category.

Other Category Gold Award winners on the night included Talbot Technologies Ltd for the Ainsworth Premium Plus Series – Magnificent 7 & Cash Challenge Toppers in the Export Category and to Gallagher Group Ltd for the Gallagher T20 Terminal in the Toolmaking Category.

This year’s range of entries highlight the importance of Plastics as a critical enabler to key sectors in our economy including Food & Beverage, Agricultural, Automotive, Medical, Aquaculture, Building & Construction, Industrial, Consumer and Waste Management. Entries also demonstrate new processing Technologies and Material Development that have been commercialised in the past 2 years Plastics New Zealand Business Manager Ken Sowman said.
