Literacy and numeracy assessment tool for all learners

Growing New Zealand’s skills – the Literacy and Numeracy Adult Assessment Tool New Zealand’s economic growth depends on us having a skilled workforce. And that includes having an improved level of literacy and numeracy. The Government has developed and implemented a national assessment programme to gauge the literacy and numeracy levels of people entering training. It is called the Literacy and Numeracy Adult Assessment Tool. Learners signing into a Competenz Level 1 or Level 2 training programme should complete the online assessment. They will do this before they start training and may be required to repeat the Snapshot Tool again towards the end of their programme of study, based on their initial results. The Snapshot Tool establishes which learners are likely to succeed in their training and which learners should be given extra support to help them with literacy, language and numeracy support during or before their training. The Snapshot assessment taken towards the end of training measures learners’ skills level again so they can see how their training experience has impacted on their skills. We are working to raise awareness of the language, literacy and numeracy skills across our industry sectors as we know it’s a challenge for companies. Recent research undertaken by Competenz tells us that over 25% of food and beverage manufacturing companies face training challenges due to language barriers, numeracy and literacy, comprehension, learning speeds and listening skills. Engineering companies face similar challenges, though to a lesser extent, but the fact remains that these skills are fundamentally important for every New Zealander. So we’ve embedded literacy and numeracy into our programmes. Exercises and examples are provided to ensure learners understand what they’re learning and can apply this in their everyday work. Building literacy and numeracy skills on-the-job is a proven and effective way to grow skills levels – and to build the productivity of our workforce. What are the benefits for you? Modern workplaces are increasingly complex and improved literacy and numeracy skills have benefits for your business: • Increased productivity • Fewer workplace mistakes • Safer working environment • More committed staff • Lower staff turnover • More cross skilling A workforce with high levels of literacy and numeracy skills is better able to contribute to developing an increasingly competitive economy. The Snapshot tool will: • Give learners information on their current skills level • Outline which literacy and/or numeracy skills the learners need • Provide information to Competenz so we can recommend next steps for learners in terms of further training • Provide results on learners’ progress over time so we can report on a group’s progress • Help us evolve our service and resources The information from the Snapshot Tool will lead to better customer service for you, more engaged on-the-job learning for learners and increased productivity for you - and NZ Inc.
