Waitakere College is our only Auckland-based school with a ‘Competenz Accredited’ status in engineering. This accreditation tells prospective employers in the engineering trades that students graduating from Waitakere College are being prepared to a level that meets industry expectations. Companies gain access to a pool of school leavers with the National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Level 2 and apprentices with high potential.

Bruce Scott, the head of department for technology, is very pleased with his students’ efforts. His classes have gained ‘Trade Academy’ status through Massey High School, West Auckland’s leading Trade Academy school. In early September Bruce is taking his class to the New Zealand Maritime School to find out more about marine engineering as a career choice. He is also rewarding his engineering students with an Auckland Harbour Bridge climb.

As a Tools4Work school, Waitakere College receives professional development and support for their technology teachers, and support for industry placements under the Gateway scheme. Currently their students are making stand-up scooters using 49cc engines as part of the programme.

Competenz has sponsored an InZone Careers Kiosk for the school library. This kiosk hosts videos of possible careers (Competenz sponsor forestry and engineering videos) and provides a text follow-up service that gives students links to the Competenz website.
