Top butchers compete for national title

Abigail and Jack

Across the nation, young butchers and apprentices are perfecting their cutting and presentation skills in anticipation of the 2014 Alto Young Butcher and Competenz Butcher Apprentice of the Year competition. There’s a lot at stake with both the Alto Young Butcher and Competenz Butcher Apprentice winner vying for a place on a 2015 study tour to the UK which will help develop their butchery careers.

Last year’s winner Abi Lane says since winning the competition more doors have opened for her. “It’s great to be recognised by those in the industry who I look up to. Not to mention I have a trip to the UK coming up which I’ll learn so much more from,” says Abi.

The butchers and apprentices were put through a series of challenges during the regional stage of the competition including a cutting test, written exam and interview. Chief Judge, Matt Grimes, says the entrants have more to prove this year as they will also have to showcase their value-adding skills. “The industry has really grown over the past few years and we’re now offering customers complete quick and easy meal solutions. Contestants will have to show us they can keep up with current trends,” says Matt.

Entrants have until May 24 to get their entries in and once the regional finals have been completed, 10 finalists will go onto compete in the Grand Final in Auckland on 12 September.

The competition is supported by Alto Packaging, Competenz, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Dunninghams, Hellers, Kerry Ingredients, New Zealand Pork, Wilson Hellaby, Cabernet Foods, Ken Wilson Meats/Natural Farm and Tegel Foods.
