Well done Tool Blacks!

Jaric Savill, an ATNZ apprentice seconded to Aztech Engineering Ltd was one of thirteen talented young up-and-coming tradespeople who represented New Zealand in Germany this July at WorldSkills, also known as the Trade Olympics.

Jaric competed in the Welding category and found himself on his way to Leipzig, Germany after winning this section at the WorldSkills New Zealand National Championships. Over 1,100 competitors from more than 60 countries attended WorldSkills 2013, which provided our hottest young tradespeople the opportunity to see how their skills stack up against demanding international standards.

Jaric was joined by Competenz apprentice Reece Gerrits from Thorburn Engineering in Hamilton, who competed in the Sheet Metal Technology category. Reece received a Medallion for Excellence and finished 4th in the world in the Sheet Metal category at WorldSkills, behind Taipei, Brazil and Korea, all countries who give their competitors funding to train full time for the competition.

Before Reece left for Germany he was interviewed on Seven Sharp – check out the clip here. Or you can view the WorldSkills New Zealand website for photos from the competition.
