Forestry Training Assessors are paid whether a worker "passes" a unit standard or not.
- Individual performance in a particular skill is assessed based on Unit Standards, written specifically for Forestry requirements and registered on the New Zealand Qualification framework by the Forestry ITO - Competenz.
- There are only two outcomes of assessment against a forestry qualification unit standard – “competent” or “not yet competent”. Assessors are paid regardless of the assessment outcome and this cost is on-charged to the forest contracting company.
- Over 230 contract assessors work regionally around New Zealand, specialising in different skill sets. Competenz has increased the numbers of assessors significantly since May 2013 in response to industry demand. All assessors are trained and certified, and Competenz pays them to take part in professional development and group workshops every year.
- Assessors undergo a rigorous quality control auditing process from Competenz called moderation. Assessors’ standards are reviewed in the field by Competenz to ensure assessment standards are maintained to the highest level.
