Where legislative and health and safety requirements are associated with this qualification, and related unit standards have been prescribed, the programme provider or the ITO must consult the explanatory notes section of the unit standards.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the binding and finishing sector of the print industry with individuals who have attained appropriate capabilities and competencies to work in the industry in the role of a bindery operator with limited supervision.

The qualification is designed for people who are undertaking general production activities in one of the areas of folder operating, guillotine operating, print finishing, hand bookbinding or machine bookbinding.

Recognition of employee capabilities through the provision of a qualification may encourage learners to consolidate their skills through a formal training programme.

Knowledge and skills that are recognised by this qualification will support: competent job performance; the future introduction of new technologies within the sector; and further personal up-skilling in the printing workplace.
