The purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as advanced operators in a sawmilling operation.

Graduates will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of plant and equipment used in sawmilling without supervision.  Graduates will also be responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment and will be capable of troubleshooting and making decisions to maintain productivity.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the wood panel manufacturing industry with people who have introductory knowledge relevant to entry-level roles in the wood panel manufacturing industry.

Graduates will be capable of working safely in entry-level operational roles under close supervision.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

• Use basic wood panel manufacturing skills and knowledge to carry out basic entry-level tasks.
• Communicate and work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team within a wood panel manufacturing worksite.
• Apply basic health and safety and environmental skills and knowledge to work responsibly and safely within a wood panel manufacturing worksite.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the wood manufacturing sector with people who have the advanced technical skills and knowledge required to operate as trade-level saw doctors.

Graduates will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of saw centre plant and equipment, without supervision.  Graduates will also be responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment and will be capable of making technical decisions related to saw specifications to maintain productivity.

This purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing industry with people who have the advanced technical skills and knowledge required to operate as trade-level finger jointer operators.

Graduates will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of finger jointing plant and equipment, without supervision.  

Graduates will also be responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment and will be capable of troubleshooting and making decisions to maintain productivity.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the wood manufacturing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge relevant to operational roles in the areas of log yard, wood fibre, and timber yard operations.

Graduates will understand hazard management and will be able to perform tasks specific to operational roles within these areas, under limited supervision.

Strand:

• Log yard operations: 53 credits, 12 months
• Wood fibre operations: 55 credits, 12 months
• Timber yarding and dispatch: 50 credits, 12 months

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the wood manufacturing industry with people who have the foundation skills and knowledge relevant to working in this industry.

Graduates of the Foundation Knowledge Strand will have a basic theoretical understanding of safety, environmental and quality requirements, as well as knowledge of operational processes, used in wood manufacturing.

Graduates of the Wood Handling and Distribution Strand will be capable of completing practical tasks required for entry-level roles in log or timber yard operations under general supervision.

Graduates of the Wood Processing Strand will be capable of completing a range of different basic practical tasks required for entry-level operational roles under general supervision.

Strands:

• Foundation knowledge: 40 credits, 12 months
• Wood handing and distribution: 40 credits, 9 months
• Wood processing: 41 credit, 10 months

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as an operator in a solid wood manufacturing operation.

Graduates will understand safety, as well as, environmental and quality requirements relevant to solid wood manufacturing.

Graduates will be able to safely and efficiently operate plant and equipment used in solid wood manufacturing with limited supervision.

Strand:

• Timber grading: 74 credits, 8-12 months
• Sawmilling: 49 credits, 12 months
• Timber treatment: 67 credits, 18 months
• Pole, post and pile: 62 credits, 18 months
• Timber machining: 79 credits,  18 months
• Finger jointing: 78 credits, 18 month
• Saw doctoring: 77 credits, 16 months

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as advanced operators in a solid wood manufacturing operation.

Graduates will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of plant and equipment used in solid wood manufacturing without supervision. Graduates will also be responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment and will be capable of troubleshooting and making decisions to maintain productivity.

Strands:

• Timber grading: 50 credits, 8 - 12 months
• Timber drying: 45 credits, 8 - 12 months
• Timber treatment: 55 credits, 8 - 12 months
• Laminating: 48 credits, 12 months

This qualification provides learners with advanced skills and knowledge relevant to the tissue converting sector of the pulp and paper industry.  

Graduates will be responsible for managing the operation and changeover of tissue conversion plant and equipment that is complex in terms of the decision making and troubleshooting skills required to meet full operational capacity.  

Graduates will also supervise the work of other employees in the changeover and operation of tissue converting plant and equipment.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing industry with people who have introductory skills and knowledge relevant to entry-level roles within this industry.

Each strand represents a process undertaken in solid wood manufacturing. Graduates will be capable of working safely in entry-level operational roles in one of these processes under general supervision.

Strand:

• Timber grading: 58 credits, 8-12 months
• Sawmilling: 53 credits, 8-12 months
• Timber drying: 45 credits, 8-12 months
• Laminating: 55 credits, 12 months
• Pole, post and pile: 74 credits, 14 months
• Timber machining: 53 credits, 8-12 months
• Finger jointing: 53 credits, 13 month
• Wood panel manufacture: 58 credits, 8-12 months
