About this qualification

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry with skilled people who are able to independently install Air Conditioning systems up to 50Kw nominal cooling, and who are working with Synthetic Refrigerants, including HFO's, in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and industry best practice.

This qualification is designed for people already working within the industry to gain a credential that will enhance their employment opportunities and/or people that are in an allied trades such as Electrical, and Plumbing, and wish to enter the HVAC&R industry.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of the principles and applications of air conditioning plant and equipment up to 50Kw nominal cooling, together with the skills and knowledge of engineering tools and fasteners, to safely install to manufacturers specifications and industry best practice.
  • Apply knowledge of the use and management of refrigerants in the HVAC&R industry including recovering refrigerant into a cylinder and evacuate and charge Air Conditioning systems in accordance with current regulations and best industry practice to safely meet all relevant environmental and industrial legislation.
  • Apply knowledge of legislation and codes of practice relevant to their industry including, passive fire protection, indoor air quality including council G4 compliance requirements, and seismic restraints.
  • Apply knowledge of welding to braze and purge braze copper piping including the mechanical jointing of pipe to an acceptable industry standard.
  • Work safely with a relevant understanding of Health and Safety requirements and workplace safety culture - Install ducted systems of plain and insulated solid and flexible ductwork, terminal fittings, and fans, ensuring that the air volume for heating, cooling and ventilation are achieved according to human comfort standards and codes.
  • Apply knowledge of basic energy efficiency design principles including heat recovery ventilation, thermal properties of ductwork, and diversity of air conditioning plant, to assist in reducing the carbon footprint of the industry.
  • Pre-commission Air Conditioning installations up to 50Kw nominal cooling.
  • Read and interpret plans, legends, and drawings and produce accurate site measures for manufacture of air conditioning plant and equipment.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) industry with skilled tradespeople that are able to independently install, maintain, service, and commission plant and equipment to industry standards.

RAC plant and equipment may include: commercial air conditioning plant found in multi-story buildings; commercial refrigeration equipment similar to that found in a supermarket; domestic refrigerators; heat/energy recovery units; industrial single or multi-staged refrigeration and air conditioning systems; or temperature and environmental control equipment in the food processing industry.

This qualification will typically be achieved in a workplace environment whilst completing a New Zealand Apprenticeship.

Graduates will be able to:

  • apply engineering trade skills and knowledge to plan, troubleshoot, recondition, and test when maintaining and servicing a range of RAC plant and equipment
  • apply engineering trade skills and knowledge to plan, install, and test a range of RAC equipment in accordance with industry and statutory standards
  • commission basic installations and work with specialists to commission the full range of complex plant and equipment
  • apply an understanding of the principles of RAC system design and applications to all aspects of their work
  • recover refrigerant into a cylinder and charge refrigeration systems in accordance with current regulations
  • apply knowledge of the use and management of refrigerants in the RAC industry to safely meet all relevant environmental and industrial legislation
  • carry out the electrical work associated with installing, maintaining, servicing and commissioning refrigeration plant and equipment
  • apply an understanding of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and workplace safety culture to work safely and meet responsibilities in a commercial environment
  • recognise the limits of their ability and the importance of working with integrity and maintaining currency.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the New Zealand Rail Industry with personnel who have the skills and knowledge required to drive trains on the rail network.

The qualification is intended for persons wishing to enter the rail industry or people already working in the industry who want to move to a train driver role.

Graduates will be capable of working independently under broad guidance to drive trains on the rail network.

Graduates of the Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) strand will be able to operate passenger services on the electrified urban networks.

Graduates of the Locomotive strand will be able to operate locomotive-hauled services across the wider network.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Obtain, interpret and communicate information required for the safe and efficient operation of the train
  • Interpret and comply with rail operator rules, signals, train running systems and standard operating procedures
  • Work safely when in or near the rail corridor to protect self and others
  • Apply detailed knowledge of route features, their risks and implications for drivers to ensure the safe operation of the train
