New Zealand Certificate in Rail Operations (Train Manager)

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the New Zealand Passenger Rail industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as a train manager and deliver safe and efficient customer services to people travelling on the rail network.

The qualification is intended for people who wish to enter the passenger rail industry or people already working in the industry interested in moving into a train manager role.

Graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision to carry out the duties of a train manager, on board passenger trains operating on the New Zealand rail network.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of the rail environment and safety procedures to maintain the safety of passengers and persons working on or near the train
  • Provide passengers with the information and assistance they require to complete their intended journey
  • Operate communication equipment, train and network equipment to ensure service performance expectations are met
  • Respond to emergencies and maintain the security of all people, trains and equipment on the rail network.
